Grenada Travel Guide

Grenada is a beautiful Caribbean holiday destination, where even the most popular beaches remain blissfully uncrowded. Less developed than its counterparts like Jamaica and St Lucia, there are no resort towns, no high rises - just lots of secluded, powdery-soft beaches and a lush, mountainous interior.

Despite its low-key charisma, Grenada has a good selection of restaurants, bars and places to stay. The best beaches - including Grand Anse - and the majority of hotels in Grenada can be found conveniently grouped together in the south-west corner, meaning everything's easily accessible within a 15-minute taxi ride.

Things to do in Grenada - The Highlights

For such a small island (it's not even as big as the Isle of Wight) you'll find a surprising amount of interesting things to see and do. Immerse yourself in local history and culture with a tour around the historic capital city, St Georges. Lose yourself in fragrant spice plantations (Grenada is the world's second biggest producer of nutmeg), and learn how chocolate is made on a bean to bar tour at Belmont Estate. Laze the days away on white sandy beaches that live up to every Caribbean cliché, or venture further from the resort and glimpse Grenada's volcanic origins on the black sandy beaches on the north-western coast. Take a cooling dip under a waterfall in the rainforest, or cool off on a snorkelling adventure to the Underwater Sculpture Park at Molinere Bay. Visit the River Antoine Rum Distillery to see how the Caribbean's favourite drink has been made in the traditional way since 1785, or indulge your sweet tooth with a tour of the Grenada Chocolate Company factory.

Weather in Grenada

Weather-wise, the best time to go to Grenada is January - April. These are the driest, least humid months.

September and October, known as 'hurricane season,' are best avoided. Although severe storms are rare, these months see high humidity and the most rainfall - and some hotels and restaurants close.

May and June offer a good balance between weather and value, as many hotels offer reduced rates during the shoulder season.

Dining in Grenada

There are lots of decent dining choices in Grenada. Many of the resort's own restaurants are very good, offering fine dining Caribbean and international cuisine. You'll also find cheap, tasty bites on the street: sniff out delicious barbequed chicken, roti wraps and fragrant curries from the beachside eateries at Grand Anse Beach.

Where to stay in Grenada

Grand Anse

Grand Anse beach is the longest and - arguably - most beautiful in the whole of Grenada. Lots of hotels have cottoned onto this fact, housing themselves along the beachfront. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars - perfect for sunset-watching. Despite its popularity, it's usually quiet and doesn't feel overdeveloped, particularly at the southern end. Top hotels in Grand Anse include Spice Island Beach Resort.

Pink Gin Beach

Dotted with half a dozen swaying palms, Pin Gin Beach is where Sandals Grenada Resort & Spa is located. Sink into a sunlounger and order a cocktail, or snorkel in some of the Caribbean's clearest, most fish-thronged waters just offshore. When the sun starts to sink, meander back up the hill to South Seas Village - the liveliest of La Sources' four villages - for sundowners.
