Miami Travel Guide

Miami is a vibrant city with a great climate, ideal for a winter sun break. It's the second largest city in Florida, located on the Atlantic coast in the south east region of the state - backed by the Everglades National Park. Miami is known for its miles of beautiful sandy white beaches, art-deco architecture and ultra-hip nightlife scene.

Beach Life

Miami life and energy has been portrayed through the movie and TV screens for years. With numerous hotels and self-catering apartments, Miami is a favourite state-side destination for all ages and is a hot spot for celebrities from all over the world.

Miami Beach has three parts to it; North Beach, Central Beach and - the most well-known - South Beach. Known locally as SoBe, South Beach is the most stylish place in Miami, famous for its Art Deco District - an architectural treasure trove of over 800 neon-lit beauties dating back to the 1920s. Rollerbladers skate along the boardwalks, culture-vultures gawp at the buildings, and sun-seekers bask along the sandy shore line. During the day watersports are popular, but as soon as the suns sets the party scene kicks into gear.

North Beach is quieter than South Beach (proudly so), but still worthy of exploration - especially on foot. With beautiful beaches, a selection of diverse eateries, MiMo (Miami Modern) architecture and lots of green space, it is a lovely place to spend the day walking the boardwalks.

Culture

The history and culture of Miami is often overshadowed by the popular haunts and trendy clubs along South Beach, but dig deeper and you'll discover that the city is home to an extraordinary blend of cultures and diverse neighbourhoods. These include Little Havana, Miami's Cuban quarter (which has a charming café culture), Coral Gables (known for its known for its tree-lined boulevards and historical landmarks) and Coconut Grove - Miami's oldest neighbourhood.

Downtown Miami boasts cutting-edge nightclubs, restaurants, museums, a performing arts centre, and lots of opportunities for retail therapy. You don't need a car to get around Downtown Miami - most things are walkable, and you can get around for free on the Metromover (a train line suspended above the roads). Biscayne Bay shows off with its luxurious hotels and marinas brimming with million-dollar yachts.

Whether you want to enjoy the vivacious nightlife, explore the wonders of Everglades National Park or simply relax on the beach, Miami has many different sides to experience. Miami also makes a great choice for a twin-centre Florida holiday with its close proximity to the Florida Keys, Naples, Palm Beach, the theme parks of Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale.

Dining in Miami

Given that over half of Miami's population have Hispanic roots, it's no surprise to find latino-influenced dishes on many menus. No trip to Miami would be complete without trying its delicious fritas cubanas - the Cuban equivalent of a hamburger. The paprika flavoured burger patty is made from beef and chorizo, topped with onions and ketchup, served with shoestring potatoes known as papas fritas.

With its coastal location, seafood is also popular in Miami. Stone crab claws are a favourite local delicacy. Crab season runs between October and May each year, and during these months you'll find them on menus all over town.

As with elsewhere in Florida, the preferred dessert in Miami is Key Lime Pie, which has a biscuity base, a custardy middle (flavoured with lime zest), and a meringue topping.
