Hong Kong Travel Guide

Hong Kong is one of the world’s most exciting cities to explore. Bursting with life, Hong Kong holidays combine superb tax-free shopping with cultural sights, futuristic architecture and some of the planet's most exciting dining opportunities. It's a popular weekend stop-over destination, although there are enough things to do to justify a longer city break.

The most popular parts of Hong Kong for visitors are the Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island. Kowloon’s ‘Golden Mile’ is known for its vast array of designer shops, glitzy malls, night markets, and street food stalls. Over on Hong Kong Island, Yee Wo Street is another busy shopping hotspot. It's also where you'll find one of the city's most famous attractions - the tram ride up to the top of Victoria Peak - Hong Kong's highest mountain. At the summit, there are lots of lively restaurants where you can sample some excellent dim sum, served with sumptuous skyline views. It's also where you'll find Hong Kong's Madame Tussauds™ Museum.

The city transforms as the sun sets, as the vibrant nightlife scene kicks into gear. Glittering skyscrapers illuminate the harbour as the pubs, clubs, bars and night markets come to life. Lan Kwai Fong in Central Hong Kong is where you'll find the largest concentration of after-dark entertainment and parties, with nearby SoHo providing a more sophisticated scene of trendy wine bars. No trip to Hong Kong would be complete without seeing the iconic Symphony of Lights, the world's largest permanent light and sound show in Victoria Harbour. Enjoy uninterrupted views of the show from the deck of a boat on a night cruise along the Harbour.

Weather in Hong Kong

The best times to go to Hong Kong are March - May and September - November, where the temperatures are warm, and it's not too wet. Winters can be chilly, whilst the summer months tend to be hot and humid. That said, everywhere has air-conditioning, so it's possible to tailor what you do to suit the weather conditions at any time of year - and summer is traditionally high season to fit in with school holidays.

Hong Kong is busiest during holidays and festivals - like Chinese New Year, which is also when some of the best shopping sales take place. There's another big sale during July - August - a great time to visit for bargain-hunting in the malls and designer fashion stores.
