Maldives Holidays
Maldives Travel Guide
Maldives holidays combine dazzling natural beauty with some of the world's finest resorts and hotels. Top this with a sprinkling of infinity pools, a dusting of palm trees and a generous helping of world-class diving spots: you've got all the ingredients you need for the perfect beach holiday.
Picture paradise in your mind and conjure up all the white sand/crystal clear water clichés you can think of - this is what Maldives holidays look like. You'd be hard pushed to find anywhere else in the world with softer, whiter beaches, or more vibrant turquoise waters.
The Maldives is one of the planet's most exclusive holiday destinations. The nation is made up of 1,200 impossibly pure coral islands, nestled in a far-flung corner of the Indian Ocean.

Things to do on Maldives Holidays
It's a one-resort-per-island setup, so choosing the right Maldives resort to suit you is crucial. Some islands, like Kuredu Island Resort, are fairly lively with lots going on in the evenings, whereas others, like the Constance Moofushi with their 'no shoes, no news' ethos, are so relaxed that after a week there you'll be almost flat-lining.
Scuba diving and snorkelling are big news on Maldives holidays. Many resorts, like OBLU NATURE Helengeli, have incredible house reefs, so you can simply walk straight into prime snorkelling territory. Other Maldives resorts, like Atmosphere Kanifushi, require a short boat trip to the nearest reef - so if snorkelling's a top priority, it's worth checking out what the options are before you decide exactly where to stay in the Maldives.
Maldives holidays can be as active or as lazy as you like. Kick the day off in a relaxing fashion with a sunrise yoga session (no 'beach visualisation' techniques required); have a windsurfing lesson; go hobie-cat sailing; hit the tennis courts; dive into the swimming pool or go for a jog along the shoreline. If that all sounds a bit too energetic, you could hunt out the 'secret' bar at LUX* South Ari Atoll , get your toes beach-ready with a pedicure in the spa or simply glue yourself to the comfiest sun lounger on the beach, call over a waiter and order a cocktail.
Holidays to the Maldives are the perfect antidote to hectic urban lifestyles, where it's easy to unplug, unwind and get well and truly away from it all. Pack your swimsuit and sunglasses (but leave your Jimmy Choos at home) and escape to Maldives, where the only thing you'll fret about is whether or not you'll see dolphins on the complimentary sunset cruise...

Maldives Holiday Weather
Temperatures are pretty consistent all year round in The Maldives, with average highs of 30°C. May is typically the rainiest month, although you'll find it rarely rains all day - normally tropical downpours come and go very quickly and the sun soon returns. The most popular time to go is from mid-December - April. Diving is good all year round. As a general rule of thumb, the visibility is best on the western side of the atoll from May - November and on the eastern side of any atoll between December - April.
May, June & July and September, October & November can be a little cloudier and rainier than the rest of the year (by Maldives standards; rest assured you'll still see plenty of sunshine during these months) - this is 'low season' and it's when you'll see Maldives hotels putting out special offers. Christmas, Easter and August are typically the most expensive times to go.

What to eat in The Maldives
Traditional Maldivian cuisine draws on the two most plentiful food sources in the region: fish, and coconuts, with spicy curries being a particular national favourite. Almost everything else has to be imported, although lots of resorts are now using hydroponic gardens to grow their own organic herbs and vegetables on-site.
Restaurants in the resorts offer a wide variety of food, often drawing on influences from Asia, India and Italy. The chefs are used to catering for Western tastes; you'll feast on all kinds of dishes, from wood-fired pizzas and grills to pasta, noodles and stir fries - all served with a tantalising island twist.
Many of the restaurants are positioned right on the beach (or even over the water) offering fantastic views, especially at sunset. The fine-dining M6m restaurant at OZEN by Atmosphere is actually located under the water, making it a particularly spectacular place to sample their incredible seafood dishes.

Where to stay on your Maldives Holiday
The Northern Atolls: Baa Atoll, Raa Atoll
If you're seeking a true Crusoe-esque escape, these desert islands are the place to go. The neighbouring Baa and Raa Atolls are some of the least-developed parts of the Maldives. Baa Atoll and was recently made a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
Haa Alifu Atoll
The Haa Alifu Atoll is the northernmost atoll in the Maldives. It's miles away from Male - but the longer transfer is worthwhile to put some distance between yourself and the capital so you won’t be bothered by the proximity of the airport or commercial shipping lanes. One of the best resorts in this area is JA Manafaru . It has its own private island, where you can opt to be marooned for a short time for a taste of total isolation (thankfully with a walkie-talkie to contact the hotel when you want to be picked up). Being off the beaten track, it's great for snorkelling and diving with plenty of unspoilt reefs. The best time of year to have a chance of spotting manta rays and whale sharks on dives is from August - November.
The Lhaviyani Atoll
The Lhaviyani Atoll is home to three of our most popular Maldives resorts: Komandoo Island Resort , Kuredu Island Resort and like Atmosphere Kanifushi . All these hotels are highly rated; with Atmosphere Kanifushi offering a particularly good all inclusive package. Komandoo Island Resort is a popular adults only option; everyone comes home raving about the peaceful atmosphere and friendly staff. Kuredu Island Resort is perfect for those who like a little bit more going on, with a lively nightlife scene (by Maldives standards, which on the whole is pretty laid back).
The Male Atolls
A short hop from the airport at Male, the short transfer times make North Male Atoll and South Male Atoll attractive options. North Male Atoll is home to the Oblu Select at Sangeli , the perfect place to chill out - especially if you stay in one of their fabulous water bungalows with your own private pool. Given the proximity to Male, if you get a case of island fever it's possible to take a day trip to the capital of the Maldives to explore the local markets, stalls and National Museum.
Ari Atoll: North Ari Atoll and South Ari Atoll
Made up of 105 islands, Ari Atoll is one of the largest atolls in the Maldives. As such, you'll often see travel guides dividing it into North Ari Atoll and South Ari Atoll. LUX* South Ari Atoll is one of our favourite resorts located - as the name suggests - in the South Ari Atoll, whilst Constance Halaveli is a great place to stay further north, with a fine house reef. Known for its excellent snorkelling and diving, the Ari Atoll boasts some of the best underwater scenery in the Maldives. The islands in North Ari Atoll and South Ari Atoll are usually reached from the airport at Male by seaplane, ensuring your holiday gets off to a memorable start. Keep your camera handy for some amazing aerial shots of the reef-ringed islands.
