Mauritius Travel Guide
After Mark Twain visited Mauritius in 1896, he concluded: 'Mauritius was made first, then heaven; heaven being copied after Mauritius.'
Today, Mauritius holidays are just as heavenly. The year-round sunshine, picture-perfect beaches and lush tropical landscapes are complemented by a host of upscale luxury resorts, complete with a dotting of sun loungers and an attentive waiter on hand to take cocktail orders.
Tempting though it is do nothing more than while away the days lazing on the beach, there's so much to discover in Mauritius for those who like to venture beyond the resort.

Things to do in Mauritius – The Highlights
Despite its relatively small size (the entire island would fit comfortably inside the M25), there's not much you can't do in Mauritius, making it an equally popular holiday destination for both honeymooners and families .
Wildlife flourishes here; ramble around Black River Gorges National Park, famous for its spectacular waterfalls, or zip line over the canyons at Casela Nature & Leisure Park. Explore Mauritius' colourful landscapes on a horse riding trek and, if you're lucky, spot some rare Mauritian birdlife along the way. Admire the horticultural wonders at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens (some of the world's finest). Enjoy a round of golf on one of the island’s championship courses. Greet the sunrise and the stallholders at Central Market, where you can hone your haggling skills on everything from souvenirs to spices.
Take to the sea for every watersport imaginable; from sublime snorkelling and diving experiences to excursions to nearby desert islands. Go dolphin watching, deep sea fishing or just watch the sunset into the Indian Ocean from the deck of a catamaran.
As evening draws in, put on your dancing shoes and join the locals Sega dancing - an energetic hip-wiggling jig accompanied by upbeat music.
You could happily spend a week on holiday in Mauritius venturing no further than the resort's spa, or you could explore the island and see something new each day. Whatever you choose to do, you can be sure of a warm welcome. The hospitality of the Mauritian people is second to none; visitors to the island inevitably return home raving about the service.

Dining in Mauritius
Given that at some time or other, Mauritius has been colonised by the Dutch, French and British (bringing with them Indian and Chinese workers), coupled with influence from visiting Arab spice traders and Portuguese sailors, it suffices to say dining options in Mauritius are diverse. You'll find everything from fiery Indian curries and Asian noodle salads to Creole hot-pots. A foodie paradise, tantalising culinary delights are everywhere you look - whether it's posh nosh in a five-star resort or roadside snack shacks serving seafood fresh off the boat.
Where to stay in Mauritius
Balaclava
It has to be a coincidence, but the unusual name of the town hints at the kind of clientele who seek out this part of the island; privacy and seclusion are high on the agenda. Here you'll find luxury hideaways such as and Maritim Resort & Spa ; a very highly rated Mauritius hotel. They overlook Turtle Bay, which delivers all the talcum-powder sand, crystal-clear water clichés you can think of - and with a coral reef close to the shore it's one of the premier snorkelling locations on the north-western coast.
Belle Mare
The highlight here is the gorgeous white sandy bay - one of Mauritius' best beaches. Protected by a natural coral reef, the shallow waters make it the best snorkelling spot on the east coast. Despite being on the quieter side of the island, Belle Mare has plenty going on - choose from golf, watersports or cool off at the family-friendly waterpark. There's usually a pleasant breeze (very welcome when the sun is hot), which also makes it an excellent windsurfing spot. Belle Mare is home to several of Mauritius' high-end hotels including and Constance Belle Mare Plage , and LUX* Belle Mare .
