An island with over 3000 years of documented history, Sri Lanka sits off the southern coast of India and is the perfect holiday destination for those people who are looking to get away from it all and enjoy a wonderful blend of cultures. With British, Dutch and Portuguese influence, there’s no denying that Sri Lanka’s ancient past has been shaped by those who have colonised it, and this melting pot approach is what makes it so special. Combining the amazing blend of cultures with the vast, idyllic western coastal beaches, destinations like Bentota, Galle, Hikkaduwa and Kalutara are now very popular, and a newly constructed highway linking these destinations to other points of the island makes Sri Lanka the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun in one of the most beautiful locations on earth.
Sri Lanka is not only a great place to sit and enjoy the smell of the sea and the feel of the sun on your body. It is also an island steeped in history. With around 3000 years of Buddhist and Hindu heritage, and two main cultures – the Sinhalese (in the ancient cities of Kandy and Anuradhapura) and the Tamil (in the city of Jaffna) – you’re bound to fall in love with Sri Lanka’s iconic and signature blend of history and culture.
Sri Lanka Holidays
It’s not just the people that make Sri Lanka an ideal destination, it’s the place itself. With its mist-shrouded mountains, its tea plantations, the many hilltop villages, various Buddhist temples and pilgrimage sites, there’s no limit to what you can see and do in this special place. With an astonishing seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, those of you who are interested in Sri Lanka’s traditions are recommended to take a tour of the Cultural Triangle of the island.
Known more traditionally, the Cultural Tringle is known as Rajarata “The King’s Land” and was a crucible of early Sinhalese civilisation, and can be found around the cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, whose grand monuments remind us of the golden age of Sinhalese civilisation. Alongside the more tourist-heavy areas, there are a number of lesser-known sites escape mainstream attention, yet are well worth your time and give you a more real sense of life on this magical island.
As well as the man-made and natural wonders of Sri Lanka, the island is home to a range of wildlife, for example the dense concentration of leopards that can be found in Yala National Park, the majestic elephants that can be found in the Pinnawala elephant orphanage, and – if you visit between the months of November and April – there’s even whale watching. These are just a few of the natural spectacles offered on this amazing island, and so much more awaits you when you land.
After a long day of exploring, you’ll want to really indulge in some luxury, and Sri Lanka is home to some of the finest luxury accommodation available anywhere in the world. So with friendly, genuine locals ready to greet you at your 4-5* hotel of choice, taking a holiday to Sri Lanka will take you to a destination unlike any other.
