Zanzibar Travel Guide

Zanzibar island (also known as the ‘Spice Island’ due to spices being the island’s main export for the last thousand years) is arguably the number one beach location in East Africa, with an absolute stunning selection of dazzling brilliant white sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters containing beautiful aqua marine life as well as lush plantations, and an incredible history and a fascinating culture.

Stonetown, recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the historical capital of Zanzibar island, steeped in tradition and is a maze of palaces, bazaars and markets making it one of the most enchanting and atmospheric places on the whole Swahili Coast with its huge vibrant open air market being a ‘must see’ attraction.

Zanzibar, however, is best known for its glorious beaches and boasts a great selection that run from the north to the south west of the island via the east coast with nearly all featuring crystal-clear waters lapping at soft powdered sands and partly shaded by dozens of palm trees. Zanzibar offers some outstanding snorkeling and world-class diving experiences thanks to its numerous coral reefs – with the focal points being Mnemba Atoll to the north-west and the Menai Bay Conservation Area, to the island’s south-west.

There is a wide range of top of the range hotels on the island. The luxury Melia Zanzibar is a 5* all-inclusive hotel that is located on the idyllic beach of Kiwengwa and offers a true relaxing ambience amongst a stunning setting.

Zanzibar can be visited as a stand alone beach holiday or as a relaxing add on following a Tanzania safari tour. But however you visit this picturesque island get prepared to be amazed and in awe of the natural beauty that it is so renowned for.
