Halkidiki Travel Guide
Halkidiki is made up of three finger-like peninsulas, all bordering the Aegean Sea. Lesser known than many of the more popular Greek holiday destinations, the area has managed to hang on to much of its authentic Greek charm. Go to discover the region's rich history, pretty scenery, and tasty local cuisine. Halkidiki's immaculate beaches are certainly appealing; you'll find some gorgeous sandy gems and lovely sheltered bays along the coast.
Things to do in Halkidiki - The Highlights
The westernmost peninsula, Kassandra, is the most popular and developed of the three 'fingers' - although it's still pretty low-key and laid-back. It's where you'll find most of the good hotels in Halkidiki, with the added bonus of short transfer times from the airport at Thessaloniki. Three of the main holiday hotspots in Kassandra are Sani, Nea Moudania, and Gerakini.
Sithonia, despite being the middle finger, offers a warm and welcoming greeting to holidaymakers. It's less developed, more rugged and a favourite with outdoor enthusiasts. Mount Athos, the easternmost peninsula, belongs to a secretive monastic community who don't usually allow visitors - although you can take a sightseeing boat ride to catch a glimpse of some of the monasteries perched on the rocky cliffs.
Holidays to Halkidiki can be action-packed – try mountain biking, hiking or kayaking – or relaxing escapes filled with sun-lounging and spa treats.

Where to stay in Halkidiki
Sani
Set within a 1,000-acre wildlife reserve, this purpose-built resort town combines four five-star deluxe hotels, each with their own Blue Flag beach. Sani Beach and Sani Club are firm family favourites, whilst Porto Sani overlooks the yacht-filled Sani marina and has a very good spa. Sani Asterias Suites offers boutique, all-suite accommodation for a taste of luxury, with Michelin-starred chefs heading up the restaurants. All of the hotels are suitable for families, with good children’s clubs run to UK standards and a Babewatch service which allows you to relax on the beach whilst someone else keeps an eye on your little tinkers.
Nea Moudania
Nea Moundania is located right at the top of the most western peninsula. It's home to Ikos Oceania, a large, comfortable resort with lots of facilities and a fab beach, making it easy to stay at the hotel for the entire duration of your stay. If you do choose to venture out, there's a busy fishing harbour to explore, as well as a 2,000 seater amphitheatre, which hosts several open-air events throughout the summer. There's also a lovely long sandy beach, lined with cafes and bars.
Gerakini
Gerakini sits on the coast between the Kassandra and Sithonia peninsulas, surrounded by rolling hills and pretty olive groves. The village itself is fairly sleepy; you'll find a couple of traditional Greek tavernas and a handful of shops, but the main draw is the stylish resort Ikos Olivia, which has a lively atmosphere with plenty going on.
