Cancun Travel Guide

Holidays to Cancun and the Riviera Maya are all about white sandy beaches, buzzing nightlife and having plenty of fun in the sun. Beyond the beach, there are designer shopping malls, Mexican markets, fancy restaurants and nightclubs - as well as ancient Mayan ruins to explore.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya remains one of the most affordable Caribbean holiday hotspots, with loads of all-inclusive hotels offering excellent value for money and plenty of added extras included.

Whether you're looking for family fun in the form of aquariums and beach games, or adults-only spas, golf courses and hardcore partying, Cancun's upbeat atmosphere appeals to a wide range of holidaymakers.

Things to do in Cancun - The Highlights

Many of the hotels in Cancun are located on a long beachfront strip known as Hotel Zone. Boasting 14 miles of talcum-soft sandy beaches, the Caribbean Sea sits on one side, with a calm, protected lagoon on the other.

Activities

During daylight hours, sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and diving are all popular pastimes. The Mesoamerican reef sits just offshore (the second largest barrier reef in the world), offering some undeniably beautiful underwater scenery. If you don't have a PADI qualification, you can try 'snuba' diving - a cross between snorkelling and scuba diving, which allows you to swim up to 20ft under the sea (you breathe through a mouthpiece, which is connected to air tanks on the surface). Lagoon-side, jet-skiing and parasailing are also on offer, making the most of the calm waters.

Out of town, impressive ruins of the once-great Mayan civilisation can be seen at Cobá and Tulum, which is home to a big pyramid-shaped temple known as El Castillo. Whilst you're there, embark on an adventure to explore the nearby partially submerged caves, sinkholes and underground rivers.

Nightlife

After dark, Cancun comes alive. Nightclubs turn on their state-of-the-art light shows, and celebrity DJ's spin the decks. Partyholics flock to clubs in Downtown Cancun, whilst the Hotel Zone's live music bars, acrobat shows and ever-flowing cocktails ensure everyone has a good time.

Dining in Cancun

You'll find all kinds of restaurants within the hotels and surrounding areas in the Hotel Zone, offering cuisine from all over the world. Whether you want to munch through Mexican dishes whilst being serenaded by a live mariachi band, savour five-courses of fine-dining in a candlelit garden, or dive into a buffet of all-you-can-eat shrimp - you'll find eateries to suit all tastes and budgets in Cancun.

Where to stay in Cancun

Cancun City - Hotel Zone

Cancun City is separated into two areas: the Hotel Zone is home to the beaches and is where you'll find the main tourist hotspots, resorts and nightlife, whilst Downtown is where you'll find the Plaza La Americas (a large shopping mall), handicraft markets and an energetic clubbing scene. There's plenty of choice on the accommodation front, but our preferred choice is Le Blanc Spa Resort.

Riviera Maya

Further down the coast, Riviera Maya boasts sugar-white sands and some excellent off-shore snorkelling. Several eco-parks are within easy reach, where you can get up close and personal with the local wildlife - whether it's swimming with dolphins, playing with monkeys, or river-rafting past flamingos. Revel in five-star luxury at UNICO 20 87.

Playa Del Carmen

Playa Del Carmen is a lively resort town, one of the trendiest spots on the Riviera. You're never far from a party; street dancers, cocktail bars, live music pubs and lively sports bars provide the warm-up act before everyone moves to the beachfront clubs to continue the revelry into the early hours. During the daytime, make time to go snorkelling - the reefs here really are magnificent - and visit nearby Tulum and Cobá for jungly ruins and Indiana Jones-esque sightseeing. Don't miss the chance to visit Xcaret, an eco-park which'll give you an (enjoyable) crash-course in Mexican culture and ecology.
